I'm just the opposite - when I have used BP I was surprised at how easily it cleaned up. A bucket of hot water with a little soap and a brass bristle brush......clean in no time. I pulled the gun out a couple months later to make sure the bores were still OK and they were still shiny.

I use GoJo (cream one) on a patch for cleaning my BP cartridge firearms. Folled by a non petromleum based bore cleaner (TC 13) Clean up is quick.

I keep two plastic pails in the basement , one for hot soapy water and the other for hot clear water . It doesn't take but 5 minutes to clean and run a dry patch , then one with oil on it through the barrels . Just shot 8 boxes of BP at a pheasent hunt and it took about 10 minutes to clean both guns . Jonty , I attended a "tower" pheasent hunt last weekend and twice left BP shells hoping someone else would shoot them . Never heard them go off , maybe they took em home and will shoot em later . Being the only one shooting BP with a hammergun I got quite a few comments . Paul

I shoot a lot of BP days at driven birds, normally get through 100+ cartridges.
This is what I do.
Dismantle gun and flush barrels through with cold running water (hosepipe) THEN I mop out with a patch soaked in a solution of ethylene glycol (antifreeze) soluble oil (lathe cutting tool coolant) and paraffin / kerosene.
Use some disposable nitrile gloves = no mess, no fuss,clean barrels.
