"FAUL" is for Fabriques D'Armes Unies De Liege and it was part of the Hanquet folks lineage with Martin Hanquet as an ironmonger in the late 18th century, a conglomerate with the likes of Bertrand, Fresart, Pirlot, Simonis, etc., which I think began with "FAL" Fabriques D'Armes De Liege with Ancion as a partner. In the 1850s Colt visited Liege and apparently struck up a deal with FAL or FAUL to make his percussion revolvers. This partnership lasted well into the 20th century, if not later. In 1890 Colt patented it's "Rampant Colt" I think FAUL had a similar mark of a "Rampant Centaur". Browning approached FAUL but settled on FN for the manufacuture of its weaspons.
