A friend of mine has an Ithaca Flues that's been in the family for years. 307850, 30" barrels and appears to be a Grade 1. Anything else you can tell me?

According to the serial number table in Walter Snyder's book that would be 1919-vintage gun.

The Flues guns have a bad reputation for being built too much on the light 'Game Gun' model and consequently were unable to safely handle modern American shotshell loads. It is said that the frames were poorly engineered and shooting modern loads caused the frames to break. This was mostly seen in the 20ga guns. The N.I.D. model Ithaca was introduced in 1925 to remedy this 'problem'. My present favorite game gun is a 12ga Flues model Ithaca, but I shoot RST reduced pressure shells in it...Geo

Thanks for the replies. I have an NID and was aware of the Flues frame problem but didn't know that it was mostly seen in 20 gauge.

I think that I have seen just as many Fox guns with cracked frames as Ithacas. All but one of the Ithacas were 20's while all of the cracked Fox guns were 12's. The "weak frames" is more suspect than fact I suspect.

Depends on the Flues.

I have two, one weighs 8 1/2 pounds. The other only 6 1/4 pounds.

Guess which one has a lighter frame?

I have a lightweight Flues 20 Field grade. I have used store bought loads "before I knew better". As long as you use your gun for hunting not trap and or skeet it will be fine IMHOO. But if you're going to shoot the cr@p out of it, all bets are off.

I've taken the Flues apart and a NID and I'm just throwing this out there but the Flues looks like a very complicated piece of machinery when you look at her guts, while the NID looks fairly simple. Might it be a part of the overall reasoning of Ithaca to change over to the NID was to eliminate these complications, to manufacturer an easier design??
p.s.
Okay I saw the pictures on another thread and I edited my post.
