Hi all, just was wondering if anyone has or seen the DVD by Midway USA "Gunsmithing British Side by Side Shotguns" with Jack Rowe and Larry Potterfield?

If so, any good?

All the best!

Greg

I have it and it is an interesting show. However, each segment is necessarily short and lacks details I'd like to have. Jack Rowe is somewhat difficult for my Texas ear to understand. He mumbles quite a bit. But even with its weakness' I think the CD was worth it and recommend it. Jack is probably the only "old time" English smith who we're ever going to see on film.

I reviewed it in the latest Shooting Sportsman and came to very much the same conclusions as Joe. While it takes some patience to develop the right "ear" and the explainations are somewhat vague in places, it has to be the most comprehensive documentary on the repair of British shotguns ever likely to be produced.
I wish I had it 25 years ago, and the current aficionado should be delighted with the opportunity.
Warning, it is Very long, over four hours and best to be taken in smaller doses...
you'll love it Pete. When viewing, don't look for the critisisms, imagine the enormous person investment from Jack.

OK, Steven, I bought the DVD. Maybe it will help me avoid being criticized for breaking my screwdrivers, or do I mean turnscrews? Jack Rowe, like a lot of you guys, is a wonderful resource.

Well, the DVD arrived today. It is certainly worth watching. A good production. I am able to turn the volume way up, so the soft speech is not a problem. I will going through this for some time.

Amazing to watch him make a spring with the simplest of tools, from memory.

Pete, I agree. I got it today and the part relating to the Southgate and Baker ejectors was well worth the price. I had no problem with hearing the dialog, and I am hearing impared I am told.

Jack has had Parkinson's disease for about 5 years now. Each day is hard for Jack. He is physically weak and his voice is weak, accordingly. His mind still has great amounts of knowledge that each of us wish we could download on a CD. I have been able to attend several of his classes since 1998. Each class I learn something new. I recorded much of his class of 1998 that was conducted at Murray College in Oklahoma and once in a while play them to reinforce my memory. I am glad that some officially recorded what Jack has to contribute to us.

His knowledge of the trade in Birmingham during it's last gasp is great also. It has been a pleasure listening to him describe and comment on people he knew in the trade when he began as an apprentice in 1947 at S. Wright & Sons.

There are still a few people in the trade in the gun quarter of Birmingham working that knew and know Jack, such as Malcolm Cruxton in Price Street, Birmingham. Malcolm will likely soon retire and we will lose one of the best and quickest stockers in England.
