Don't want to be the devils advocate, but gun registration is not a bad thing.
Where I live gun ownership restrictions are beyond imagination for someone from the US. But within all the absurd regulations that we have, gun registration works well.
It's a quick and inexpensive procedure, done the same way as you would do for a car.
Stolen guns are more easily tracked, ditto for guns on consignment etc..
And gun registration is handy when travelling with guns, I was once stopped by the police in a foreign country, and was cleared in a couple of minutes with my police issued gun registration, not so for the Americans travelling with me which had no proof of ownership at all....It all ended well, but not without stress and after hours of calls and faxes.
