Nathan, quality is a very sticky word, but the inletting and engraving are very similar to a Joseph Manton that I picked up. Sounds like the same proof marks as well. My understanding is that the platinum blow plugs went out of fashion in the 1840's so I would suspect it of being slightly earlier (though going out of fashion in the 1840's would hardly preclude its being made in that decade). The stock appears to have virtually equal drop at comb and heel, as does mine.

"Track of the Wolf" has a number of percussion muzzle loader SxS guns for sale (which do sell) as a point of comparison for value. Condition of the barrels will be of importance to its value. I would not sell it for $400 (even to me).

I hope it proves to be a good shooter for you.

Track of the wolf has some strong prices on there sxs.I have a couple other muzzle loader sxs with london proof marks one is a mortimer 12ga the other is A FIELD & Co 16ga. The Burrow has a much higher quality feel to it.

TotW is an increasingly good venue for antiques and reproductions. If you really want to scare yourself try Roosevelt and Drake--they are pushing mint stuff in original maker's case with untouched frizzen, blah blah. And it's not under-priced. Of course the value drops by 60% when you walk out the door, and another 60% if you ever test fire it!

I've never seen a real Mortimer.

There are a lot of detail similarities between that Burrow and my Manton--obviously part of the same London aesthetic (and probably time).

I am going to concur that platinum vents just aren't usually seen on other than high grade guns. In trying to "look thru the grunge" it appears that you have a good candidate for at the very least a cosmetic restoration. It appears to be more in the used and neglected rather than the used and abused category. If you're planning on shooting this gun I'd suggest trying to find a gunsmith familiar with muzzleloaders so the breechplugs can be pulled for a thorough inspection of the barrels.
