It was made by Andrew Fyrberg. Fyrberg was a Swedish immigrant gun maker. He starting producing about 25 guns a day in the late 1890's in Worcester, MA on Tuft street. In 1899, he was contracted by Sears to produce guns for them as Richard Sears wanted to get into the gun trade. At that point his production rose to 200 per day.

In 1905 Sears wanted to expand his operation. He hired AJ Aubrey and set up operations in Meriden, CT. It is believed that Fyrberg was coerced by Sears to sell his equipment to the new company and come help set up the factory.

He apparently continued to make guns after this on a reduced scale. He may been selling some of his output to F. Biffar as well as Sears.

From the 1900 census:
Andrew Fyrberg, born Feb 1863, age 43, 1877 immigrated from Sweden, Fire Arm Manufacturer
Annett, wife, age 43
Anton, son, age 22, toolmaker
Herman, daughter, age 20, Fitter - arms co
Anna, daughter, age 18, office girl
Lillian, daughter, age 10, at school

The Chicago Long Range Wonder was just one of the many trade names that he used. This trade name was most likely used later by others as well. Fyrberg held many patents.

Thank you, great information. I had not heard of him before and assumed he was a marketer, not maker.

I , also, thought that the name of the gun was neat. Bought a barreled action and never did anything with it.
Seems that it is more patient than I, as it still sits waiting.
Thought it would make a good project and probably would. For somebody younger than I.LOL

John

Good to hear from you John.

What is your take on the action you have...from a design and quality standpoint?

Mark

It seems fairly typical for a box lock. Thru bolt making it a cinch to stock without much expense. Innards not polished, but which were at that price range. Not crude, though.
This is the only one I have seen, or looked at, and has more engraving than would a common field grade by any of the the lesser makers.
I probably should not say this, but the rib matting might be hand done. If so, this speaks to a biyt more attention that onethat is not.
Best,
John
