I have read this discussion with interest hoping I would get an answer to a question I have had. My old LC Smith has a drain hole in the bottom rib under the forearm. I read in the article that helps answer the question about the safety of shooting old doubles that the author would not shoot an old gun with an drain hole in the rib, because of the possibility of hidden corrosion. I thought it would be good to fill the space with oil and let it drain out. I was surprised that oil seeped out from several spots along the rib. The barrels ring fine. Do I have a problem? Thanks, Dan

Ugh. Sorry, man. I had a feeling about the drilling.

Sorry to hear of your woes mate
Do you have any recourse from the seller?,,,private sale ..or Dealer???
I guess I've been quite lucky in the few (about 8) 1920-30's sxs guns I've had in the last decade or so..only one disaster
And that was the most beautiful 1904 Francotte 14 or more likely 18e ...But thanks to Abe Chaber I got my cash back.
Have you contacted the seller at all?...or is it way to late???
good luck

Maybe not exactly the same but a good time to ask the question. I have had 2 barrels welded because of very small splits within 8" of the barrel ends. Both barrels were sent to Freddie Bruner who was at one time a smith for Pachmeyer. Both were repaired and reblued. One a Parker VHE 16ga.with 34" barrels the other a field grade LC 12ga. with 30 barrels. Your opinions please as to safety.

I have seen such holes many times, all caused by amatures installing mid-rib beeds, or sling swivels. This is the first I'v heard of one disguised or partly repaired.

Chalk it up to another of those "school of hard knocks" lessons.

Mark D - My wife, the teacher, also suggested I should have learned a lesson with this one.

I purchased the gun through another friend of mine. I'm sure he knew nothing about the holes but I will mention it to him. He let me inspect it as long as I wanted to. He just picked up a Win. Model 21 he want to sell me. Maybe he will make me a deal on that one.

I may be looking for some full length sub-gauge tubes if I can find a good set at a fair price. I found some brass ones in 16 gauge but they are pretty heavy.
