Franc, By no means did I think of you as being rude.
About 5 months ago I was looking for an English style 12 Ga. Something with a little engraving and still in good enough condition to be used on clays. I found this gun on Gunbroker with about five very blurry pictures. After talking with the owner I made sure there would not be a problem returning it within the three days. Well with those blurry pictures I still thought I was taking a risk and evidently so did others as I was the only bidder at the end of the auction. When the gun arrived I was extremely pleased with my $800.00 investment. It has helped to make up for the many of my gambles that have not pay off.

Raimey and all, I would like to thank you very much for your research and opinions. You can be sure I will be documenting the information and saving it with gun.
Best wishes, John

John E.:
If you ever have the locks removed, see if there are any interesting stamps or initials there. I think the worn mark is a "K" preceeded possibly by a "H". The "HS" more than likely is for J. Heinrich Schilling and would pair nicely with an early relation either with or thru a hammer forge. J. Heinrich Schilling could have worked for the heirs and assigns of Valentin Christoph Schilling, who if he began in 1816 at say the age of 20 would more than likely have retired by the late 1870s. It is the separate listing of J. Heinrich Schilling and Valentin Christoph Schilling that leads me to think that V.C. subed or sourced the work to J. Heinrich Schilling as during this period V.C. as deep into military production and most references note V.C. as being purely in the military realm. The absence of the Lindner marks coupled with the defining Lindner forend latch is interesting and may point to Lindner having sourced or subed work to the Schillings(take your pic.). Yours is a very nice example and if original may realize a price nearly twice the posted cost.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Hello John,
Have to agree with Franc, very nice gun! Congratulations on your "gamble". Great to know you will be shooting it. It is, after all, what it was made for.
Also enviously,
JC

Beautiful gun. Well done on the price. I looked at this thread on my netbook a while back but the pictures were too large and no matter how much scrolling I did I couldn't really see more than a small piece of the gun at one time. Now on the 17" laptop and glad I clicked on the link. Well done for $800. Well done!
Mike
