I really don't 'lump' anyone around here (we're all real 'individuals'), 'specially not to hOjO...I just thought a little 'reverse psychology' might help old Ed out with his effort to peddle his research materials by keeping folks off his '6'; seems to have worked pretty well...Geo

Times might be tuff for the EDM chappie!
Perhaps a couple of vanity grades in the future?
Now, as to selling on this BBS - I don't care if one puts his sister up for sale.

"Off his 6"- read you "Charlie-Lima" George. EDM has carried the torch for the Parker fans for years, he apparently has spent a great deal of time and effort in his research and the books he has written prove that. I am fond of most all American doubles, and extremely fond of Model 12's- I shoot L.C. Smith 12 gauge guns mainly, for one simple reason- like my M12's- they work quite well for me and I like their looks and "in-hands" feel--BUT I wouldn't say they are the best ever made, I'm not that "into" double guns for that- also where I live and get around, I seem to find more 12 gauge Smiths at reasonable prices than other American makes-IMO both Parker Bros. with their Trojan economy model and Hunter Arms with the Fulton economy model had the right idea, but the Fox Sterlingworth had the same fine receiver lines as the graded Foxes, and would be well worth owning, ditto the Ithaca NID field grade. If I were a small gauge fan, I wouldn't own the number of shotguns I do at present, curious- because back in 1921 if you went to VL&A and ordered a DHE 12 gauge with two triggers, and your brother ordered also a DHE 20 with two triggers, you both paid the same price-supply and demand, a force majeure indeed!! I just bought a Phila. Fox ca. 1905 A-grade 12-bore s/n 262 that's pretty nice, and most people would have a hard time figuring out that it's not a Parker VH. I'll have it at Hidden Hollow. I understand Phila. Foxes are rare in so far as very few were made. Visually it's every bit the quality of the comparable-grade Parker. Why Ansley went head-to-head with a dead ringer against the 800 pound gorilla is a puzzlement.

Meanwhile, I've been able to convert my Word 2007 to an earlier program (1997-2003) that seems to solve the open/downloading problem for some people. If all else fails I send a hard copy. EDM

It boils down to this: I am 68 years old and spend "quality time" at Mayo Clinic every 90 to 120 days. My researching and book writing has reached a logical conclusion. I have a great wealth of esoteric shotgunning info that right now is is being scarffed-up like hot cakes by those who appreciate it most. My primary interest is to get the word out so this stuff doesn't just slip in the crack. Most of my ring binders of hard core research materials are already in the right hands. I owned every reprint Parker catalog last week--now they are Gone!

As to "times being tough" for EDM, Nancy and ParkerDog and I live each day as a gift; we will be at Hidden Hollow PA in our Road Trek, and then on to VA; next to FL to secure our boat for Hurricane season. Then back to the Midwest for the Yooper (Iron Mt. MI) shoot the end of June, and on to Alaska (with a stop at Puglisi's in Duluth) and various stops for fly fishing in Montana, Alberta, British Columbia, and the Yukon...thence back home around mid-September to check the mail on our way to the Vintage Cup in Easton MD. Life is good...not tough. EDM

I have a pile of automotive literature that is very hard to find and I spent a great deal of time and effort and money in procuring it over the years. The thing is, once I read it and gained the knowledge, its value to me became greatly diminished. I've thought about selling it on ebay, but I might just toss it, too. The money it would bring pales in comparison to the hassle of trying to sell it.

Instead of tossing it, why not find a young man with similar interests but without your knowledge, and pass it on to him (I know, most kids today are only interested in video games and texting). Somewhere out there, though, is a kid who would devour it like I did the vintage aircraft maintenance literature the old-timers passed along to me. I don't know what stuff you have exactly, but I'd be surprised if you had trouble selling it on ebay. Maybe just put it all in one big lot and put a price on it low enough to make it attractive, but high enough to at least make it worth your trouble. Just some thoughts.

Donate it to a "collectors organization", take the tax break, let them market it to their research minded members through a newsletter or whatever. Too bad EDM didn't have that as a viable option. I wish I had that option, but, like EDM, I'll have to fling it to the winds.

Bill: The first problem with donating "stuff" to an organization harks back to the Nixon papers; check out Schedule 1040-A-Lines 16 & 17 that refer you to the Orwellian instructions at p. A-7 & 8, and, in turn, the documentation requirements of subsidiary schedule 8283--also "See Pub. 526 for details."

The second problem is the "...marketing to research minded members through a newsletter..." Please be advised that virtually all the requests for my list so far have been as a result of my listings on eBay and my starting this thread. Briefly stated, print media is dead; people don't read books or newspapers or magazines or newsletters anymore; the action is on the Internet.

The third problem with the "donation" idea is getting anyone to timely do what I did in creating the 12-page For Sale List. Historically a certain organization has taken 90 to 120 days to respond to new membership applications with money attached. And, besides, who knows better than I what the stuff consists of.

The simple solution: I priced this stuff as a "give-away" to those who see value in it, but if I had simply offered to give it away for free everyone who otherwise could care less would have wanted some.

Finally: Some of my stuff may be too esoteric and expensive for any takers; the Broadfoot Publishing reprint of 42 volumes of Shooting & Fishing (1885-1906) that sell on their website for $5,000 that I offer @ $2,500 plus S&H (each book weighs 6 lbs.). Or the 64 issues of Parker Brothers' pulp-weeekly sportsman's newspaper, Rod & Gun, ca. 1875-77 @ $1,500, which merged with Forest & Stream in 1877, and in turn merged with Field & Stream in 1930, and thus merged, exists today! These pills might be too big for researchers to swallow, and if not sold after the Vintage Cup, I will, in fact, donate them to a certain library in Middleburg VA and not take the tax deduction. Who needs the audit?

And the rest of the nominal stuff? The bits and pieces of 30 years of Parkerology and double-gun research: Bill would "fling it to the winds" to avoid being possessed by his possessions; living in the country, I have a burn pile. EDM

Thanks for not mentioning the "real reason" we won't be donating our stuff. I remember when the S&F reprints were first sold. I wonder how much they cost then?
