I believe that he was Hoss & Little Joe's grandad.

Joe: I'm sorry, I was being factitious. Nigel Brown's book lists a William Cartwright Russell StBirmingham 1807-1811 and another, Henry, Rampant Horse Street, Norwich, Norfolk 1841-1858 and his son William s.a. 1863-69 c. 1878-c.1883. I hope that this helps.

Best Regards, George

He played for the Knicks when I was there for a short time. They called him Gentle Bill. He was a very nice guy. Don't know what his LOP was, but my guess was it had to be at least 17"+

Henry Cartwright
William Cartwright
13 Rampant Horse Street
7 Bedford Street
Norwich,Norfolk
1841-1880

Henry Cartwright was apprenticed to Isaac Walker in 1805 and later became his foreman. He bought the business when Isaac Walker retired in 1841.

Between 1859 and 1862 he retired or died and William Cartwright (nephew) traded at the same address until 1880. Edwin Wilson was employed as his foreman.

William Cartwright sold the business in 1880 to Edwin Wilson who carried on the business until 1905.

By 1905 the business may have been known as H Wilson (son? - guns bearing the name H Wilson have been seen), it was then sold to Charles S Rosson (by then Charles S Rosson & Son) of 4 Market Head, Derby.

There was an earlier William Cartwright. But he did not fit the time period of this gun. He was active circa 1800 - 1815, in time for the Napoleonic campaigns. The English gun industry thrived during this early period then went into a deep recession as Europe became more peaceful.

If the dates I have above are correct, then the gun is easily dated to between 1859-1880.

W. C. Scott's patent on the top lever narrows it down even further.
