The one I use to have was a plain-Jane double trigger slim forearm Field Grade 500167, which according to Walter's table of serial numbers would be 1933. However, it was a late-style Field Grade with the border engraving and no cocking indicators, which first appears in Ithaca catalogue No. 54, circa 1935. Mine tipped the scales at 11 pounds 3.9 ounces.

Your gun looks to be a great example of a Grade 2E. Looks like the non-selective single trigger? To my eye that beavertail forearm wood doesn't appear to be original Ithaca. Apparently the Ithaca "bridge trestle" recoil pad wasn't large enough for the Magnum stocks, and I've usually seen them with either a seven-slot Jostam Anti-Flinch or a Hawkins pad. A decade or two ago I just missed a great, very late, Grade 2 Magnun-Ten with a straight grip at Randy Shuman's.

The original Magnum-Ten, serial number 500000, built for Chas. Askins Sr., but made famous by Elmer Keith, had quite a load of options, but not a beavertail.

Yes the trigger is non selective,..the beavertail has almost no finish on it, but it looks like something made at the factory, checkering has the same lines p/i and appears to be in balance with the rest of the wood but I guess it could have been replaced at some point in time.
It's all apart at the time, got the gunsmith addressing a couple of hairline cracks at the head, I think that's why it's hardly been shot the guy was probably afraid to crack the stock.
I'm glass bedding it and will shoot it this season if it stands up I'll leave it, if not I'll put new wood on it,...I have just the right piece of marbled Bastogne waiting for it.

Dave, I think that you are correct. The BT does not look like it is factory original. Thanks for not buying the NID Mag 10 from Shumans in '95...it is a fantastic gun and the only one that I have ever encountered with a straight stock.

Byron showed it to me but said it was already taken. I could hear my checkbook breathing a sigh of relief!!

The original Ithaca NID beavertails I've seen and own, have a long screw down from the front into the forearm iron, similar to Parker Bros. beavertails. Here are Ithaca beavertails -- the short style 1926 to 1934 (from a 4E 20-gauge) and the longer style from 1935 to 1948 (from a 4E 12-gauge).

What is the barrel length of your Magnum-Ten? Most seem to be 32-inch but there are some 34-inchers. My late cousin Clarance (Bob) had a 34-inch Grade 1E Magnum-Ten.

The one I let get away was a 1 1/2 Grade 32" w/ ejectors. It weighed 12 1/2 lbs. I made the mistake of asking a question about it here and an offer was made and it went away to quickly. I never even fired a shot through it.
