What would be the reason for an unfired english double to go back for reproof? Has anyone seen anything like this before? What effect would this have on the value of the gun? Thanks -JB

For myself I'm puzzled by the lack of surrounding information.

English double... In the US? In the UK? Owned by whom? How old? maker? For sale?

Re proof... Why? Current proof status? (and how determined)?

Unfired... Why? Who says so?

Under some circumstances re Proof can ADD to a guns value, but not knowing the circumstances leaves it impossible to comment further.

Question: If the gun was proofed how could it be un-fired? I've always assumed the proof house fires the gun with proof loads while testing?

Eugene, The gun, an english boxlock(name of retailer which I cant remember) is here in the states and is owned by a friend. I have not seen the gun as of yet but hoping to fix that next month. He took the gun to a well respected english trained smith who stated the gun was unfired since proof. Nitro proof 2 1/2" chambers 1 1/8oz load. The smith stated the gun could have failed proof for some reason and had to go through the proof house again. What would cause the gun to fail proof? So has anyone come across anything like this before? What does the reproof do to the value of the gun? Thanks, JB

I have saw a Greener that had been rebarreled by an 'English trained' gunsmith here in the states with no proof marks.

Jb....if I were you guys I'd stay away from that "English Trained gunsmith"....sounds to me like he failed his proof.

If the gun had failed proof, it wouldn't be marked Nitro Proof.

The proof house marks them after they pass.

Sounds like a misunderstanding.

Someone who doesn't understand British proof at all.
