I really always wanted to ask this, how do you get the pins into this area undetected? I could see gluing the stock as it is right now, so everything is in alignment, and then drill and glue in the pins. But from where do you drill these in? This location of breakage is kind of typical, so I could learn allot from the answer, I think.

Weatherby drills the hole first then epoxies in a 5/16" steel dowell. I would think two smaller pins on either side of the screw would work.

I would think it could be repaired so that no one could tell and be just as strong.
I do know if it was mine I would take it to two restoration guys here in NH (Patrick and Fredrick Norton)

A good repair in wood is as strong or stronger than the original wood. I'm sure Doug will do a good job!

I'm sure Doug will too...but it will still be a gun with a once broken stock.

Well, I know of an awful lot of broken gunstocks that are in the mainstream today. Some of them are over 100 years old. These gunstocks still work and the guns are still bringing sale prices which seem out of place to many.
The Stock Doctor has been in business for 20 years doing just this very thing. If I had to guess on the number of stocks I have fixed for clients who wished to continue shooting their favoite fiream.....it is well over 2000. Yes, I mark my work to combat fraud by unknown forces outside of my shop.

Oops! I should have said repaired gunstocks instead of broken gunstocks!!

Pete- I seem to remember a post from the very early days of this board about a fat Lab sitting on and breaking a stock. I can't remember if the post was serious or some fat guy trying to blame his Lab for his mistake. Do you remember the story?

Cary, that may be where it all started. I think the story was suspect and we now blame po ol fat labs everywhere for every stock break. Are you old enough to remember the story of the guy who found the pair of Boss's in the false drawer of the chest? That was on the old board. I started there around post 500 and Russ started at around post 200. That was a LOT of posts ago.I forget if we had about 30,000 posts or 30,000 topics when the switch was made.

Pete, as I recall, that was the Sgt. Major's chest and they were Purdeys but the story was being "discussed" (as much as anything was "discussed" in those days). I seem to remember Russ having a grand time with that one. He refered back to it often for quite a while after that.

Anyway, thanks for reminding me of the fat Lab story. I'll quit now before we hijack an informative thread but it's good to see you posting again. Oh, I showed up around post 1000.
