I am finishing a stock for a friend and the rosewood insert in the forend will not take finish in places. I am assuming there is oil in the wood. Does anyone have suggestions or experiences with this. I thought about soaking the forend in acetone.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Acetone will remove oil, glue, epoxy and anything else on the wood.......make sure there is nothing else you want removed...!

Yes i agree with using acetone but i did have one tip that i had to spray with lacquer -i cleaned the wood
then sprayed several coats -when hard i roughed up with
400 paper and the the oil finish-worked o k

Acetone SOMETIMES works. It does NOT remove ALL the natural oils in the rosewood and sometimes the oil will eventually find its way to the surface and produce a bubble under the finish. Some folks finish the tip with lacquer which does not seem to have a problem with the oil.

Put the rosewood under a hotlamp, and the oils will precipitate out.Then you can finish over it.
This is from the Brownells Kinks books.
Be careful about the walnut around it though.

I will try Lacquer after I remove the finish from the rosewood.
