So on a scattergun say, 16 bore percussion, would you want to attempt to get 2 3/4 dram or approach a velocity say something around 1100 ft/s. Was dram a representation of velocity, was it dram eq. or was it both?

Kind Regards,

A dram is a volumetric measure, equal, I think, to 27-1/2 grains(a measure of weight). Dram equivalent(DE) was a term devised to let users of the "then new" smokeless powder know how the smokeless loads would compare, in velocity, to the familiar black powder. It is still used and still confusing to many people. Stating the velocity, instead, is gradually and finally being shown on the boxes of shells. 'bout time!
I stand corrected. A dram is a weight.
Thank you, 2P

1 oz = 16 drams, so a dram is a weight. There are 7,000 grains to a lb, 437.5 to an oz & 27.3438 to a dram. In practise a dram was usually measured by volume by both manufactures & home loaders of ammunition. The same can be equally said of modern day grains of smokeless.

I realize there are variations, but a chart I have somewhere, lists density of FFG Black as .94 thus a 1 dram charge should have the volume of 29 grains water. This works out to about .115 CuIn (Note above industry standard for a black powder measure).
