I'll tell ya, for an Englishman to wind up in Ardmore in 1926 took some doin'. Not if you were a skilled gunmaker ;-).

Found them both in Cleveland and John R. Wright Jr. came here in 1923, so it was the son who was first. I'm hot on the trail, thanks bob.

The children of Samuel G. and Lillian Wright were named Vera, Eileen and Donald B. according to the 1932 passenger manifest. It seems that you're hot on the trail.
By the way, Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers" lists about 10 Wright's involved in the gunmaking trade in London and another 28 in the provinces includng Birmingham during the 19th and 20th centuries. As you know sons often pursued the trade of their fathers. One of names in the London trade is John Richard Wright at 10 Carton St, London between 1920 and 1924. This could be your man before he came to America.
Was it Hoffman Arms that was in Ohio and later moved to Oklahoma? I gotta find my copy of your book.

OK Mike, I found your book and it seems that you already know that Wright was in business with Hofffman - at least according to the article that you reference. But getting back to H&H, have you found when Wright might have worked for them?

Mike,
I've found the passsenger manifest where John Wright's son, John, came over in 1923. Also found the manifest where John (the son)'s wife, Emily K. came over in 1925 with their 2 children. The were from Cardiff and were headed for Cleveland. It indicates that Emily's maiden name was Loxton. The children were John J. (3 y.o.) and Grace M. (1 y.o.).

Bob, John senior claimed he worked for H&H for seventeen years before coming to America. I don't have him at H&H but he was listed as a gunmaker there so time will tell. I assumed (and you know what that does) that senior came here first and started with Hoffman in Cleveland then brought over the two sons to Ardmore, OK. Now it looks like John Jr. was first then the father then the other son. John Sr. opened a shop in Cleveland after Hoffman went under then moved to Kansas City and listed his business as John Wright & Son's but seems the sons were in Cleveland building cars. I got it right but was thinking the other Wright, so do two Wrights make me wrong?

Great, you were posting this while I was typing mine ;-). What was the ships name and date for 1923? I don't think I have a copy of "British Gunmakers" by Brown but do have a copy of "London Gunmakers" by him and has the same quote, more checking to be done. That's the way things work, answering one question brings up several more.

John R. Wright (the son) came over on the S.S. President Polk, arriving in New York on Sept. 26, 1923. If you have a subscription to Ancestry here is the link http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.a....41&fn=John R&ln=Wright&st=d&pid=4028189471&rc=&zp=100]
