Is it possible to use rust blue on only a part of a barrel - only blue the bare spot. I think I've read somewhere that this could be done but wonder how it looks.

I don't know how you could just rust bllue one area. Your best bet would be to try and use some of the better cold blues out of the tube or bottle and try that.

I have sucessfully "touched up bare spots" on the barrels of a gun which was formerly rust blued. Simply clean the bare spot, swab on the rust blue, set aside a few hours, and quench with boiling clean water. Repeat steps as necessary to match the blue on the rest of the barrels. Chopperlump

I just did this recently and it came out well. I would recommend shorter rusting times than if you were doing the entire barrels. This will make it easier to blend. Also, if the spot is small, you might just convert the rust with steam from a tea kettle. Much easier than getting the entire barrels immersed.

OK. I was just sitting here watching TV at 5:30 a.m. and I saw Larry Potterfield from Midway USA reblue a few small parts with a Wheeler Rebluing Kit. How about that? Is that what you guys use? Could you reblue a set of barrels with one of these kits? Or would that be too big of a job?

I like Pilkington's, but add a small amount of Laurel Mountain Forge (around 10:1). LMF has a detergent in it that helps with the smoothness of the coating. I'm still just a novice at this but like the results so far; several guys here mix their own brew.
