That butt plate shown was also on the E-Grade Philadelphia Arms Co. Fox shown in The Double Gun Journal, Volume Two, Issue 1.

Early ones look to have been made of India rubber and were imported by S,D&G???, or just a 1914 case reference??(1st full paragraph):

In also trying to research some information I went to Cornell Publications ( http://www.cornellpubs.com/old-guns/item_desc.php?item_id=930 ) where there are many old catalog in re-print. In particular was Schoverling, Daly & Gales 1892 Firearms and Sport Goods Catalog. This is a 116 page reprint and on the right column going down to Gun Parts For; there is a listing of different guns. Whether there is any butt plates or where they come from is unknown unless you have a copy.

1912 catalog way down on right column has recoil pads, again don't know if any description. Catalog is 265 pages.

Eightbore, The engineering dept. at a former employer used to make quick molds to duplicate parts out of clear silicone caulk by coating the part with a release agent and then covering with the caulk. The mold was then peeled off the part and filled with pourable polymers. I have't tried, but have wondered if a buttplate could be duplicated with dyed acraglas this way. I have often thought it would be nice to have a compendium of photos of all the various manufacturers buttplates and grip caps so that I could print them out and take them for a guide to use while rooting through boxes at gunshows. I know I've missed a few good ones that I had in hand, but did not realize what it was until later. I'm still looking for a picture of an original buttplate for a D. M. Lefever 7D or 8E grade.
