I have Tri Tronics 70 that has died. i am looking at new collars. this one is 7 years old.
has anyone used the PETSAFE DOG PRODUCTS SPORTDOG 3/4MI UPLAND HUNTER collar?

I hunt a Springer and she only needs one little jolt usually at the beginning of the day and thats it. She is collar trained.

any other suggestions for new collars. i know they have gotten smaller and lighter in the past 5 years

Brian:

Tri-tronics will give you a trade-in allowance on your old model. IIRC it was about 1/3 off on a 3 dog unit I got last year.

I also suggest Dogtra T & B training and beeper in one have mine about 6 years and it has been great love the locator button to find your dog if out of site. Collar Clinic I think will give you a trade in on your collar, I trades my old on in.

I have had a bunch of tritronics over the years, and liked all of them. I bought a Sportdog unit a couple of years ago and it has been ok except for what I thought was a short battery life. Replaced the battery and seems to be ok now. We shall see ....

I'm a Tritronics fan...but I was converted to DT Systems last year by George Hickox at his class. Not just any DT Systems collar, the ir 2420 collar in particular.

This collar is the only make that I'm aware of that has the ability to not only go down very very low in voltage, but also very fine adjustments upward (50 levels), along with a nick, continuous, jump, and rise features, all in one.

I'm convinced that for training in the yard, there is no better solution today. The lowest level, I can't feel, yet my dog responds to it for a que in training. The "jump" feature allows a very low stimulation setting for training and a higher (any level) setting for the "jump" button to be used as a correction. The "rise" button is for those times that your dog has an adrenaline rush and is chasing that pheasant flying away down the field out of control and you've underestimated the power necessary on the "jump" button to get compliance from the dog. Holding the "rise" button down will let the power increase to full power over a few seconds, but will stop on your release of the button. So, you have 4 buttons to get whatever you need, instantly.

The ability to have a low and high button is not just for "...if he doesn't comply on the low, go to the high..." use. It's part of a training method of "notifying" the dog of a wrong with a very low stimulation, and "correcting" with the higher stimulation. This notifies the dog with low stimulation that what he was doing when he felt it was wrong, then the higher stimulation is the punishment. This is part of a training regiment, not a "hang it on the dog and try it out in the field" method. With this method/collar combination, I've noted that my dog needs less stimulation, less often.

The transmitter is bigger than some, but not unwieldly. I've used mine a full season and off-season training. I wouldn't go back to another brand until they met or beat these features. Personally, my opinion is that the Tritronic has the best build quality in the industry. But I'm not going back until they put equivalent or better features in their collars.

Brian, I hope your back on US soil, didn't see a posting of your return. Again, thanks for your service and that of your men. God Bless. It's Dogtra on my end. I asked for opinions on the SSM dog forum and got a pant load of responses. Talked to a few folks and decided the Dogtra was the unit for me. Drove over to the Collar Clinic in TC and felt their imput was positive on the Dogtra so I got the Dogtra [two dog] 2502 T&B, the newer version. Has a 0 to 100 level gradient on the response mode. One of the nice features, is the beeper. Has the point modes, but the locator is helpful and I also use it as "Hey, I'm talking to you. yes, YOU" Brother is using it on his new springer. It's helpful when he's working with his other goldens and just wants to get the pups attention without the others responding to his whistle and draw everyone back to his location. Just an opinion. I really like the Sportdog stuff, it's compact and easy to use. Ijust gave my son in law an 1825 and he loves it. Probably as many answers as there are makers.

Chuck, have you had a chance to use it with Gloves on? Buttons look small and relatively low profile, should someone in a Northern clime worry about that?
