It’s a slow day around here so I’ll share a question I was asked. The question was about this rifle after the auction was over why someone would pay the price they did for it. What do you folks think?

Two guys bidding against each other took it from $401 to $655. My guess would be auction fever, because it's probably overpriced at $400.

It would have been an interesting rifle. That is......the rifle that was originally built in that stock.

If I'm not mistaken, that's a stock for a Mauser. The thumb recess is still visible on the left side of the receiver. And it certainly isn't inletted to the rear tang of a Springfield. The bottom metal fits a little funky also. There aren't any closeup pictures of any of the inletting....for good reason.

Nice vintage Lyman receiver sight, a low numbered Springfield action, and a stock that likely couldn't be salvaged without major effort.

If I had to assume knowledgeable bidders, I'd have to guess they recognize the stock maker.....

I agree with Grandview's observation that it is a Mauser stock,
also the description of the bore is not good, "light pitting, 6 out of 10". If there were stamps on the floorplate or trigger guard indicating that it was an NRA sporter, would that be sufficient reason to drive the price up so?

Easy...they didn't know what they were doing!

I think also that the stock came off a mauser. I've got one that for all intents and purposes is 100% identical. Right down to the checkering and finish. Only the later added buttpad is different from the added one on that mess.



The barrel looks to have been sleeved into an original. I can't see what they were chasing.

For the record M***P is NOT me ;-). Looks like two guys did all the bidding hope I don't hear from the winner. This rifle generated a lot of interest and for a few seconds I was interested when I heard it was a 1903 in side-paneled wood ( White's rifle). One man pointed out that it looked like someone "Shoehorned" a 1903 into a Mauser stock, a good description.

I wasn't going to touch that when I saw it.

I don't believe that the thumb cutout is for a mauser. It looks like it's made to clear the Springfield. The tang looks a little high on the left side but OK on the right side. I think someone might have a good candidate for a restoration.
