JDW: I have 101's with the polyurathane finish; I don't like it either but it's a skeet gun--3-barrel set--and I want to keep it original in case I ever want to sell it. But I also have a Citori that came in with a polyurathane (after-market) spray-on finish, finish even got into the checkering, both butt stock and forend. It took me nearly a full day just to get the old finish off. I then refinished it and put a leather covered pad on it. Now it is one of my favorites. Just an idea...
