generally, any shotgun barrel made prior to the late 1980's is not suitable for steel shot.
A well trained and knowledgeable gunsmith and metalliurgist I know says that any shotgun - with chokes open appropriately - that has been made since the end of WWII is capable of shooting steel shot with the current plastic shot cups, etc. He proves this constantly by shooting steel in a Stevens 311 made in or around the late 50's. I have seen the barrels and their is no damage. Sooooo, I have to ask, upon what fountain of knowledge do you base your rather "general" opinion??
