That was classic... Best, Ted Yes it was. There was an earlier one...concerning a retired British Sergeant-Major and a Purdey in a chest of drawers. We can dream; and believe if we choose...Geo

One of my friends had very close connections with one PD and one officer who was in charge for picking up illegal guns and guns people just wanted to leave at PD forever. According to the law all these guns have to be destroyed. My friend couldn't take barrels or receivers, but he could take locks, springs, screws, wood etc. Finnally he collected a lot of different gun gizmos and some of them were real tresure.

I know a couple of guys here who disassemble seized firearms slated for destruction and sell off the salvaged parts. For some reason you never see any Glocks,Sigs,Colts or S&Ws. I guess the police only seize inexpensive and cheap pistols?? Jim

And then there were the guns that Duncan King Mann stashed in the bottom of an old box. Found by his nephew and brought us a humongus deal of laughter and joy. Best regards, John

Please elaborate John. It sounds like one heck of a story. Jim

I have never found anything in a dumpster, but I do enjoy my evening walks around my subdivision on garbage night when people set things out for the next day's garbage man. One neighbor of mine redid his kitchen last spring and tried to sell his used cabinets at a garage sale. When none of them sold, he put them out for the garbage man that week. I picked them up at 3a.m. and now they are hanging in my garage. The same guy had set a large Ryobi plastic box out for the garbage one evening. I thought it would make a nice carrying case for something, so I went back over to get it after dark. When I picked it up to take it home it was full of something I figured was trash. But on the way home I figured whatever was in it would go out in my garbage. When I got home I opened the box and there was a nice Ryobi drill, hand saw, battery and the charger. The battery was bad so I went to the Home Depot and bought a new one for 25 bucks, put a new saw blade in the saw for $5.00 and now they both work beautifully. The drill was about a $175.00 drill. Other neighbors put out cabinets, entertainment centers and all kinds of building supplies that I bring home. My reloading station has cabinets and shelves from all over my neighborhood. But, so far........no guns.

I'll bet all your neighbors wake up in the middle of the night...the wife is scared that she heard a noise. The husband just tells her to go back to sleep....it's just 'ol Jimmy W digging in the garbage again. There's a good chance they will soon leave a ham sandwich on a plate with a sugar cookie - don't take the bait because they will attempt to photograph you eating it.
As for Ryobi power tools, I put mine out in the garbage, too, and the sheetrock guy saw them and took them home. I hated to see him do that but then I figure he did it to himself.

My best find was Ward Brothers wooden decoys at a dump. I did not know what they were when I put them in the truck. I wanted the lead anchors. Took them home and hosed them off. Then I thought they were a decent copy of a Ward Brother carved decoy. But he tail was not exactly right. Ward bothers were carver that lived about 30 mile from my home then and their work was becoming of interest to collectors.
Back then both Steve and Lem were alive so I took the decoys down for them to look over. They said that they were theirs and they told me they had changed the tail for two years and went back to the original style. For a few dollars they signed all of them and I had them repaint two for display on my mantle. The rest I use to hunt once ever year as a tribute to all those hunters and carvers who have passed away.
Years later I took duck hunting, as a favor for a friend, a Doctor who was a big time collector of Ward Brother decoys and a general pain in the a--. When he saw we were hunting over almost two dozen of them he just about went nuts. Offered me his Mercedes and cash for the lot. Turned him down and told him to just be sure not to shoot low. Shot chips the paint. He bugged me for years before he gave up. In fact I was almost afraid he would do an intervention, steal them, to save them. Some collectors loose all sense when they do not get their way and this guy was one nutty collector.
My current wife has me on a tight lease. No more trips to the dump and no weekly dumpster diving. I envy you guy but I might smell better than a few of you.

I would never eat a ham sandwich out of the garbage, GregSY!! Just what kind of a person do you take me for, anyway? Now a gnawed on cheeseburger is another thing. Mmmmmm.....sugar cookies? But, that drill has come in handy around the house from time to time. My next door neighbor tore apart and threw out this huge entertainment center and I was over there loading it into my car. I built a nice cabinet next to my reloading bench and put the two lights in different places in my basement where it needed more light. I hung two nice cabinets out in my garage and got all my oil and anti freeze cans up off of the floor with other neighbors trash. I usually grab those cabinets when I see them.
