Hi, Chuck! I knew we weren't far from your honey hole when I saw all those carrots. Actually we were in Santa Barbara Canyon, NW of that (unless I was turned around, which is quite possible in that country). The chukars were on the dry ridges off that stretch of Santa Barbara Canyon Rd. which is Nat. Forest land, just before you go back into the private (posted) land at the head of the actual canyon, on the left hand going in. We went to the end of the canyon road and then hunted down both sides, as best we could. I saw where the Quatal Canyon road leaves 33 (and would have gone in the Original Plan, cut a bit short by the wind and cold. but the upside is we saw no snakes, nor other hunters, although I found where somebody had plucked a bunch of quail, and found some dog crap and fired shells).
Any time you need a gun bearer, give me a jingle at g.armstrong@hvcc.edu. Not sure my companion this time is up to it again soon, but Mike Cross might be (and I can show you my new C. Sharps Hi-wall--the high/low tech Montana Marvel).
Glad you had a good crosscontinental drive; I thought the Cody Museums were great, especially the Plains Indian Museum. I think everyone ought to drive across the U.S. every few years--puts some things in perspective.....like we're not running out of places to put our used razor blades anytime soon!
