I have seen similar work to this and this one looks awfully familiar. Anyone have any ideas?.....Art

From the crossbolted stock, buttplate, outside barrel band and starguaged barrel appears to be an altered NRA Sporter. Many good smiths did this work between the wars, notably G&H, but this is definitely not theirs. Considering only so-so condition, IMO priced at well over double its actual value.

Agreed! I certainly don't want it but the style of checkering and grip looks familiar.

The checkering looks a little like Howe (diamond in the checkering) and a few others but not done as well.

Here is a before and after picture of a NRA sporter by G&H.

Although this Cabela's is grossly overpriced, altered NRA Sporters are often unrecognized and can be among the great bargains in gundom, see the two described @ $219 and even $1000 (mine) on this forum last week, here:

I think regretfully of another, offered at $600 three Reno shows ago, stock neatly checkered but otherwise unaltered, bore VG+, that I did not buy because the front edge of the receiver was sharp cornered instead of slightly rounded. This made me and a real 1903 expert who examined it suspicious, I did not have computer access and could not get aholt of Springfield Research Service. When I got back to NYC I reached SRS with the SN and yes, it was a Sporter.... I phoned the seller at once and of course it was gone. Why the sharp corner we shall never know.

To my eye, some of the altered NRA sporters are among the most attractive of the pre-war rifles. You don't often see them, but Mr Shelhamer knew his way around the NRA Sporter.

Of course, you need a matching 1922 Hornet for some wood chuck hunting between deer seasons.

But I have to agree, the cabelas rifle is way overpriced. I guess that's why they have had it for over a year.

And a .22LR would make three of a kind!
