I have been thinking about setting up a home shop to restore / repair antique shotguns. I understand a type 1 FFL is required to do any gunsmithing. What are the ups and downs of having an gunsmith FFL? Is there an FFL just for gunsmithing? Can you actually get an FFL for a repair shop that is in your residence? I do not intend to set up a store and sell glocks. This would be repairs and restorations only.

Yes, you can get a home 01 FFL for Gunsmith use,if you do lots of buying and selling, shown in your bound book,on inspection they may give you a hard look thou on inspection. Having said that there are lots of dealers working out of their homes with 01 FFL's and not allowing and on premis transactions and seem to be getting away with it.

We aren't talking about a huge volume of biz. I just want to be legal. I get lots of friends and the like that will come to me and ask me to repair and/or restore "grandpas shotgun" and it obviously takes more than a few minutes.

dubble, its the same license, the problem arises when you have to meet all local and state zoning laws and ordinances, check those out first, some of them are out there, of course for your own safety

I'm in a township, unless it has to do with corn or cows it should be al right LOL. Seriously, like what ordinances, ( examples?) All I do is boil water and refinish wood.

Just for your information, the FFL is not for the gunsmithing, it is required for you, as a gunsmith, to keep the customers' guns for 24 hours or more. (I think)

I did all the paperwork for an 01 FFL but decided not to follow through. You will need to confirm with all local governments that you can operate and FFL business from your home. The BATFE will check on this. So check before you apply.

Those of us who "ground my buddy's recoil pad last week" (for free) are kind of in a grey area here--or are we? jack
