I have heard a few rumblinings from sources I believe reliable that in corporate that some gun rooms may close. Same situation as Bass Pro?

The local Gander Mountain in CR IA turns away more fine guns than any retailer I've ever seen. Wish I had the time to stand there and buy a lot of the stuff that walks in. I have seen them value used guns only to tell the owner/seller that they could not buy the gun because parts were not readily available, they have full time gunsmiths, and if these "smiths" were worth their salt could make these parts very easily. I recently was in the store and a gentleman walked in with a 31 Remington solid rib 20 ga. D grade. VERY nice gun with good engraving and wood. They valued the gun at 550. He accepted what he thought was an offer and the clerk replied by saying, "Sir that was only an insurace valuation, we can't buy that gun, it's on our "do not buy" list." Needless to say that gun resides in my safe. Perhaps if these stores would pay a better wage to a select few, that would get some more knowledgable staff and make some money on used guns. None-the-less it made me very happy at the time.

With this in mind, I am very interested to learn of peoples experiences or recommendations of any well respected US gunsmiths/retailers who may specialise in the larger bore waterfowling guns of old? Any guidance or thoughts on this query would be appreciated.

CBL,
Not that many 8 bores show up. I have been watching for an 8 bore W&C Scott hammergun for a long time. I let one get away and it eventually ended up in the UK.....

"I recently bought a gun from Steve Barzee at Cabela's in St. Lou, and the transaction went just fine...."
For whatever reason, Mr. Barzee has left Cabela's St. Louis Gun Library. He is/was a good guy and honest.

He probably got tired of working for/with crooks and con-men in the "Gun Game"--Cabela's Gun Library is like "See Dick Run, Run- Dick-Run, See Spot Catch Dick, etc""__

I pretty much agree with Jerry. If you have questions about a doublegun, THIS is the place to ask them. If you go in thus prepared, you're quite likely to know more than the guys in the Gun Library--about that specific gun. But remember, they also sell "classic" rifles, handguns, etc. There may be one guy who knows shotguns really well, but he might not be working when you show up. You might be talking to the rifle expert. Or all of the GL guys may be on break or temporarily absent, and you've got someone who's simply "minding the store".
They've lost some good people to other firms that DO know guns pretty well. For example, Bill Taylor from Owatonna, as well as Wes Dillon and Dave Sanders from Sidney, are all with Julia's now. Really tough to replace that kind of experience in the business.

It's happening everywhere, Larry. There are many efficient and cooperative aircraft parts supply businesses in the United States staffed by computer wizards of intelligence and commonsense who can find anything in inventory---but almost none with experience of what they're selling. The white-haired guys are gone.

Follow up report. The gun is now listed as 'Sold' http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/conten...oryId=SEARCH_gland indeed my friend went back to the Glendale Cabelas in Dec. and made an offer which was accepted. He plans to send the gun to Freddy Brunner or Dewey Vicknair for an evaluation. I believe the barrels were honed from each end with some extra honing in the middle.
