In most states leaving your hulls on the ground is considered no different than any other form of littering and is unlawful in addition to being unethical. Game Wardens in AZ are particularly pleased to cite violators for this offense. I do not think it is the guys with ejectors doing the littering. Those of us using doubles are a minority of hunters and those with ejectors a minority within that small group. Unfortunately most don't understand how this littering degrades both the habitat and the quality of future hunts there. I teach it in the hunter education courses and practice it just as TW does above - carry a couple plastic grocery sacks to pickup wherever you hunt or go outdoors.

I lean toward extractor guns for this reason, but I have to say in Argentina (where the guides pick up the hulls) and in Namibia and South Africa, shooting driven or encircled Guinea Fowl, I really appreciate ejectors for their speed. When the guineas take off, often you get a wave of birds coming over you and with an extractor gun, you get two shots at fifty birds. With an ejector, it's possible to take two in front and two behind.

Stuff 'em in your bird bag. I usually have plenty of room.

I like ejectors and clean fields, and have no conflict having both.

I always pick up my shells and put them in the back of my vest. First, I hate to see the spent shells left by slobs in the field. Second, I keep a journal of hours hunted, conditions, number of points, flushes, shots, etc. so it helps me keep track.

Pockets usually FULL of crapola when I get home.....hulls, wads, odd beer can. Sadly, does not seem to be rubbing off on many in my circle.

I pick up mine and those of others. Hate to see a duck blind that I have built littered with someone else's hulls. They can cause real harm to livestock if they get in hay bales.

I'm not much of a hunter but I think I've left a few hulls behind in the sorghum running after something I didn't hit square. I've also picked up a few thousand on club skeet range mostly from pumps and autoloaders so hope that makes amends.

Jerry,

I was hunting (shooting) doves in Yuma AZ a couple of years ago with my then brand new 2" 12 bore Arrieta. I had picked up every hull after the hunt and stuffed them in my bird bag. The warden approached my truck and asked to see my birds and gun. I immediately complied. He counted birds, looked at my gun and proceeded to get out his ticket book. I asked him what I was getting a ticket for? His reply was "littering". "He stated that he has seen the area littered with 12 gauge hulls and I was the only one in the field shooting a 12 bore". I smiled and showed him the barrels of my 2" gun "for 2 inch shells only" was written in gold on the tubes. He looked at the gun and my short 2" english shell for a minute. He then replied, "I haven't seen a single little stubby shell in the field thanks for cleaning up after yourself".

I might add he thought I was crazy for owning a gun that only shot short shells.
