Fred Adolphs troubles started with the onset of hostilities in Europe circa 1914 when his supply line from Germany was cut off. He had a large amount of money for orders in the hands of German gunmakers that they could not deliver. After the war he could not recover any of his money or goods. More good money followed bad and he lost that as well. He must have thought that things were going to get better and in the meantime he lost his reputation and his customer's money & respect. I believe that at the time the Whelen letter was written Adolph was making stocks for G&H in NYC. He was never able to set up again under his name and went to work for Ford as a tool and die maker.
