Come on, Murph....flattery won't get you off the hook in a good debate. Well, maybe this once.

Spreaders are OK, but you either have to buy them or reload them--which is either more expensive or more trouble than just shooting regular factory loads, or regular reloads. If the purpose of a gun is for birds like grouse, woodcock, and bobwhites, and you also want to use it for close range targets (like skeet, and like a lot of the setups for sxs shoots), then it makes more sense to just go ahead and open the choke(s). Exception: high end guns with which you don't want to tinker. I have one of those. The rest, I'd have no problem altering chokes to fit the purpose for which I intend to use the gun in question, the majority of the time.
I'll quickly add that for the one gun on which I won't alter chokes, I just bought half a flat of spreaders.

Of what possible use is a M-12 16ga choked extra full?
Answer: None. That's why it sat UNUSED for 50 years.
Perfect Dove gun for the Western states as is, the poor gun just ended up in the WRONG state.....

Doug, I've never shot doves in the western states, or I wouldn't be asking, but why do you need an extra full choke with probably at least an ounce of shot in a 16 to kill doves? I was under the impression that most doves out there were shot either around stock tanks or feed lots. Do you have to engage in pass shooting?

Regular full choke is fine, extra full is fine....pass shooting is the most common......most laws require a perimeter around stock yards, most owners don't want hunters on top of their cattle....we don't shoot them off the wires, trees or ground out here....at least I don't....they are fast and furious and fun....I use 7/8 oz. in the 16's , and 7/8 oz. in the 12's also....I don't need an oz., usually limit out in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the birds.......Lived in Tucson for over 25 years, same thing there......

I haven't shot a dove with anything more than 7/8 oz. in over six years, but usually find that LM in the first barrel and IC in the second works well on incomers. Only once in my lifetime of dove shooting (50 seasons of shooting) have I ever needed extra full to limit out. I sure would love to try that pass shooting someday.

Interesting post script.....
"BARREL BUTCHERING" is clearly the wrong term....modifying or adapting seems much more appropriate.
JERRY If you could put the metal that you removed back into the barrels when you chose, then I would agree.........since you can't, I think butchering is the correct term.....

I bought a few northern European doubles that were made post-WWII. They were all choked F & F. I was told (???) this is because they shoot birds on the ground and in trees. In any case, I had the right barrels opened to IC, and have been pleased with the results.
Until he started hunting with me Joe Wood didn't know a dove could be shot in the air.
I am glad to be here.
