My local pawn shop gal called me today about some military rifles she had gotten in so I stopped by. I found this Springfield Armory 1903 sitting in the rack for what I considered a fair price. I know the bolt is wrong as is one swivel and ring but what struck me was the serial number, 15034XX. This is the highest serial number I myself have ever seen on a Springfield Armory 1903. Has anyone else seen a higher number? I might add the barrel date is 3-37 from the Springfield Armory so I would guess that it is the original barrel on the receiver.

UPDATE

I went through my Springfield drawer and found a proper bolt for this receiver according to the fellas Here

I doubt the stock is the proper one but it will do for now.

I put this question to the most knowledgeable person I know concerning the 1903 Springfield, John Beard, this is his answer.

“The "highest" confirmed Springfield Armory M1903 serial number is S/N
1592563. The serial number appears on a receiver fitted to a Mann Accuracy
Barrel once in use at the Frankford Arsenal proof house. The receiver was
pictured in the February, 1971, issue of "The American Rifleman." The
serial number, however, is a mis-strike.

The "last" known Springfield Armory M1903 serial number that was struck is
S/N 1536285. The serial number was reported on a USMC sniper rifle and was
noted by the person reporting as being unusually high. S/N 1536281 has also
been reliably reported and I have S/N 1536275 in my collection.

Fourteen serial numbers have been reported between S/N 1536285 and S/N
1592563. I have no doubt that some of the reports are legitimate. But, the
serial numbers are very widely scattered and are unquestionably mis-strikes.

As a matter of note, I have 107 serial numbers in my data base between S/N
1532878 (last "official" serial number) and S/N 1536285 (inclusive). The
average spread between serial numbers is 32. I have 15 serial numbers in my
data base between S/N 1536285 and S/N 1592563 (inclusive). The average
spread between serial numbers is 3,752. So, it's unquestionably clear from
my data base where the "last" legitimate serial number is.”

Wow Michael, that is some great info and the source is "as good as the best and better than the rest". It is the most I have ever seen on the subject. Many thanks for taking the time to contact Mr. Beard and for posting his reply. I truly appreciate it.

Your welcome Larry, glad we could help. John is a stand-up guy with good information and when I have questions about the 1903 I ask John.

I have S/N 1534107 in my collection. Made in 1939, and not listed in the SRS. It came to me as a Bubba Sporter with a High Standard replacement barrel (HS-9-44) and a Redfield receiver sight.

I have 1516709 with a 2-38 star gauged barrel, stock is correct but looks like it has been lightly sanded. I don't think it was listed on the SRS years ago when I could check on line.
