Hey all, I'm new here so thanx for taking time to read this. I am looking to buy a jp sauer sxs 12ga and I would like to know if someone could help me with what its worth. Serial#A3649, full choke on 1 barrel, half choke on the other there's a #4 65 which could be the date? Has ducks on left side of receiver & pheasants on right side, has double triggers & extractors. Has cheek piece on stock, has a plastic trigger guard & butt plate, blue is very good, case color on receiver is 50%, stock has one minor crack on left side at receiver.Thanx again, I really appreciate any info.

Horn trigger guard and butt, check chamber length, mine turned out to be 2.5. Restocking is a MAJOR job if the frame has a fancy back because it is also tapered at the joint face. Great guns, generally under priced.

Yep, should be horn. Loads of those older german doubles used horn for both the trigger guards and the buttplates. They are interesting, but prone to breakage if one isn't careful. If you do break the horn trigger guard, be prepared for some hand wringing as they just aren't available anymore. You are correct with 70 mm being 2 3/4". Lots of the older german ones are marked 65mm. Far as value, I'd need to see a picture and can give you an idea. Another source of value is go to Gunbroker and plug in Sauer sxs. Some for sure will pop up. PS. I've found horn trigger guards generally don't help the value because of the breakage issue.

What you described a Model 60. Here is one in real nice shape.

No, I'm not the seller. Very good guns BTW.

Anyone know if I'm right with the date of manufacture being the 4th month of 1965? Thanx Patriot, I don't have pictures but it is in similar condition to the one you provided a link to at gunbroker.com

Yes, 465 would be April, 1965

Any other opinions/info on this shotgun would also be appreciated. I have not found any other Sauer model 60 with a horn trigger guard, is that odd? This guy is asking $450.00, seems reasonable to me but I'm not an expert either.

If it's in decent shape, that's a good price.
To check a double gun out; open it hold the barrels by the end and twist rapidly back and forth like you are trying to shake something off of it. Now, close it; take the forearm off and twist the barrels and receiver in opposite directions. With both tests, nothing should be heard or felt. Sometimes, sling hangers rattle.
Now break the gun apart and hang the barrels on your finger by the hingh pin hook and thump each barrel in three places. It should have a ring to it with no vibrations. You may have to rest your thumb on the extractor; sometimes they vibrate.
Look at the muzzles. If they meet, it's a sign they haven't been cut. Put a choke guage in the muzzles regardless of what is stamped on the barrel flat. If the barrels were cut, it would probably read cyl/cyl.

What type tube steel does it have? Horn blanks are available and you can shape them or have someone shape them. Can you give a run down of the marks on the flats? It should have had a menacing muzzle which will tell if the tubes have been cut. If you don't have a "Crown" over "W" on the flats the constrction was less than 0.2mm.

Kind Regards,

Raimey
