Good call Kieth, when I loaded for buffalo shooting, the weather was very fair most of the time. However the summers here in Iowa tend to get VERY HUMID. This humidity most often led to a least one "hang fire" at a weekend match. I know from expirience with the "duplex" loads that ignition is more reliable, but the moisture in hunting situations is usually far greater. I think reading that now would steer me away from a duplex load for hunting.

On a side note: has anyone ever loaded shotshells with IMR Trailboss? I works excellent in all the "old" cowboy arms that require less pressure. They say "fill the case and shoot" It is so bulky that you can't overcharge in cases like 45/70 and the like. I have had great results with it in traditional "black powder cartridges" There is some velocity loss, but that's no big deal to me. I enjoy shooting my old lever guns, falling blocks, and Colt SAA's. Now it seems the perfect avenue for older doubles for target loads. I know I can buy things like RST but I enjoy loading my own shells if for no other reason than to pass the wickedly cold winter after the hunting season closes.

Isn't it wonderful when everybody abides by the rules?! You "duplexers" should be ashamed of yourselves! And, you brag about what you did! You guys sure set a wonderful example! And, just when do you plan to send back the awards that you won?

BP loads should be "fresh", especially if they are to be used in damp conditions. The old Limey gunners used to save their dampened loads for "junk bird" (my term) shooting. Old-time gunfighters, like Wild Bill Hickock, used to fire off, clean, and then reload their percussion revolvers every day. This practice is still a good idea when m.l. guns are used for hunting. (There were good reasons why the hunters in "Peter and the Wolf" fired off their guns on their way home.)

If you plan to use a "replica powder", I suppose that Pyrodex or 777 should work as well as anything else. Just make sure that proper wad pressure is used (Pyrodex, in particular likes things "snuggy".) Also, make sure that your powder is fresh. Dry BP has a very long shelf life. Pyrodex, in particular, does not. Oh, by the way, these powders have to be kept dry, too.
