Mark, You're right as usual. Not so much a stunt as just the desire to see if it could be done. As for the Krag, I,m just starting in on a sporter now. It has always been a favorite caliber. One advantage to the Mauser action is that it permits use of loads that the Krag action isn't designed for. Then why not a 30-06? Well, I've done that too. The real reason for all these stunts may have to do with our age. We've seen all the typical stuff and owned most of it at one time or another. When we want something different now, we have to go further afield to find it.

PhysDoc: Barrels in .405 are available fron G. R. Douglas. They'll thread it for your action and chamber it too. Then it only takes a few minutes at the lathe to cut the correct shank length. Best of all perhaps, you can get a finished barrel from Douglas nowadays in a couple weeks! If you're my age, that's a consideration.

I saw the following rifle on gunbroker and while I was trying to do some research on it, I came across this thread and thought it might be nice to add the link from the auction to the thread.

405 Mauser on gunbroker

Did anyone else see it? What did you think of it?

Thanks, PhsDoc. I'd forgotten these posts. As for the rifle on Gunbroker, it looks like a great deal of good labor for the current price range.

A Siamese mag. assy. will fit some 98 type actions, seems like a good start to build a rimmed cartridge rifle, especially when the rim on the new cartridge would be too small for a Siamese bolt face. It would be easier to open up a bolt face, than close one( my opinion, others may disagree). I'm sure that recoil pad looked better in it's younger days, like Sophia Loren would have looked pretty good in boxer shorts in her younger days.
