question for the xperts, regarding a parker hammer gun must the rib matting end a short distance from the muzzles as normal for a hammerless parker? or did the matting on parker hammer guns run right to end of the rib at the muzzles? thanks for replies.

In both hammer and hammerless Parkers, the matting may or may not run to the end. Most have the space, but original guns with matting that runs to the end have been found. Best to measure the bores and chokes and/or get a PGCA letter to document the original length.

What about checking the S/N against the book to confirm barrel length?

What about checking the S/N against the book to confirm barrel length? That does not always work, I have an early lifter hammer gun that is 10 gauge with 28" barrels and straight grip that the letter confirms as original, however the Id and serialization book shows it as 30" with pistol grip?? I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

The rib matting on my GH Hammerless 12ga runs all the way to the end. The barrels are 28" and have not been cut.

You may want to check for keels at the end of the tubes. bill

FYI, I own a GH-16ga that letters with 30" barrels and they measure 30" dead-on. The rib matting goes all the way to the end of the rib and the keels are in place.
This bit in the Parker story about the blank space at the end of the rib matting is not a hard and fast rule. I wonder how many nice 26" barreled Parkers have been passed over because the matting went to the end of the rib?

They've been passed over because all the experts know a 26" gun will be nearly impossible to shoot, what with those missing two inches.

Does the book also list original chokes? I have to sell a DHE from a friends estate and it would help to know if the chokes (.006 & .020) are original.
