What ever happened to the Lefever resurrection project that started a couple of years ago? I know Mr. Hurst was involved in it.

It was my understanding that Steve Lamboy had the rights to make Lefevers, which he acquired when he set up Ithaca Classic Doubles. Unfortunately ICD is now out of business and the Ithaca name has changed hands a couple times since. So who owns the Lefever name now??

Good question.
There is a Lefever Arms Co. in Lee Center, NY that is the successor to Frank LeFever and Sons. They are gunsmiths and specialize now in Perazzi repairs. There is no longer any Lefever family member involved.

My feeble understanding of patent and copywrite and trademark laws is that nothing can prevent someone from reverse engineering a product that the patents have run out on or never existed. As for trademarks, that's a different subject and the laws seem to last forever or at least that's my perception.

So, an example of this is the 1911 Colt design. A bazillion copies are made and marketed.

I beleive there would be no legal issues with producing an exact copy, but the name may not be available if it has a valid trademark.

That project was nothing but wishful thinking among a few enthusiasts. It was noble, but everyone that was talking it up should have known it couldn't be done. It was always good for a laugh when I would log on and see the hyperbole about how it was all coming together soon and someone would chime in and say how much he wanted a 20 ga. w/30" bbls. or what engraving options would be available.

There's not a single reason on earth the project isn't feasible. However, it will require rather sophisticated machinery and a sizable initial order to produce a gun with a reasonable price. I would think Italy is the only place it would happen. Frankly, I think it would sell well if a base model could be produced in the $2,500 range. Truth is though--it ain't gonna happen.

Try tripling that figure, Joe. Galazan couldn't even produce the RBL for $2500, much less a design as complex as the Lefever and at a quality level of the original.

Few realize just how small the market is for a project like this and what the start-up cost would be.

When the Parker Reproduction factory closed in Japan, Jack Skeuse asked the Italians what they would charge to make the same gun; they quoted him $12,000.
