I have never seen a poor quality French double and I've owned a few. The French have a penchant for being different. They gave us the Citroen (possibly the ugliest auto ever made), the Renault, the Darne (with appologies to Ted), and many other things which though proven perfect by the Brits and Germans, the French nonetheless had to add weird attachments. Good luck with your gun as I'm sure it is well made. Oh, yeah. They conceded to perfection with the Granger guns. Chops

Skitch,

'A NEUFCHATEL' is not a maker, it simply means 'in Neufchatel' (of which there are three in France, and must not be confused with 'Neuchatel' in Switzerland.) I believe you have left out part of whatever is stamped or engraved on the barrels or rib or action of your gun, which probably reads 'SO-AND-SO A NEUFCHATEL.' This person will be the retailer of the gun.

Most French guns were made in St. Etienne; some in Paris. Boudier of Neufchatel would be the dealer who sold the gun. Hard to tell who made it, even if we had a look at the barrel flats. A lot of French guns were made "by the trade"; that is, by various craftsmen all working at their individual specialty (barrelmaker, stocker, actioner, etc). That's probably what you have. Doesn't mean anything good or bad about the quality--and, as noted above, nearly all French doubles are quite well-made. Just that it doesn't have a maker's name because, for the most part, French guns weren't made all under one factory roof, like Winchesters, Parkers, etc.
