Jim: meaningful shoot reports did not start appearing in Sporting Life until 1896 when he was shooting a Winchester pump, so the Lefever reference was only in passing. Unfortunately, the American Field (Chicago) is not yet digitized.

This is a work in progress, but profiles of Fred Gilbert, Rolla, Billy Crosby, and J.A.R. Elliott are here http://docs.google.com/View?id=dfg2hmx7_337gqdvwccf

Drew, A great piece of work! Thank you very much. You probably know Heikes had a patent for a recoil pad. I have a copy of it should you want a number.

Tom Marshall was the only man to have won the GAH at Live Birds twice and was captain of the 1901 International Match team that kicked British behind http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/SportingLife/1902/VOL_38_NO_16/SL3816012.pdf He was captain of the 1904 U.M.C. Squad, which included R. O. Heikes, C. W. Budd, J. L. Head. T. E Hubby, W. H. Heer, J. T. Anthony, F. C. Riehl and E. D. Fulford, assisted by F. C. Butler. Marshall and the first four broke the five-man squad world's record by a score 488/500 at Palestine, Texas. At the 1908 GAH, Tom Marshall, George Maxwell, and 4 others tied at 91. It was won by Fred Harlow (using a Remington Autoloading gun) in a shoot off with Woolfolk Henderson (Parker) after both scored 92. http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/SportingLife/1909/VOL_52_NO_25/SL5225020.pdf Feb 27 1909 http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/SportingLife/1913/VOL_61_NO_20/SL6120034.PDF July 19 1913 Heikes also had a patent for a clay target thrower. I've never seen a Heikes pad Walt.

Wasn't it the Budd-Petmecky [sp?] gun cleaner named for your Mr. Budd ? Neat device for a gun accessory.
