Gun Digest lists a "matted rib grade" and "trap grade". The Western Field rebadge has a matted solid rib, schnabeled forend, and simple checkered diamonds on the forend, simple "three-point" checkered area on the grip. Letters "XC" follow the serial on one of mine; can't find the other one with the case color fresh; think it's in a box somewhere. Got a feeling from what Jim says that the schnabel and the checkering may only be found on the Western Field. Nice gun for knocking squirrel off tree limbs; nothing like tree limb for blocking shot. Not a trap gun but I did shoot an 18 at 16 yrd trap with my Dad's 20 ga. That's about as good as I'm doing with 12 gauge most of the time.

The IJ Kate is holding has a schnable foreend with simple checkered diamonds, three point pattern on grip, appears the same as Jack mentioned for the Western Field. Only information is on the left side of receiver and reads: "MATTED RIB", Then IJ arms cycle works, ..Mass,USA. Randy

Randy, does your IJ have a rounded grip or does it have a grip cap like Bushmater's IJ.

Regards,

Max

Max and Bushmaster, Mine has a squared off grip without a grip cap. How about yours, Max?? I feel slighted. Bushmasters grip checkering is much wider than the one on my gun, it's only 3/4" wide. I've not seen (only in print and Internet listings) many(read maybe one)of the trap version like Bushmaster has. Bushmaster, the gun in your pics is a great looking gun. Tall solid rib with double ivories!! Cool. Have you shot any clays or game with it? Be a great turkey gun. Assume it's a 12ga.? I've got to dig out the DGJ article and get some history on these guns. I've not a clue. I thought it was a great looking single shot and now learn there is a family of these guns out there. Max, what is this deal of your Vols beating my Buckeyes tonight? I'm a closet Buckeye in the land of Wolverines and Spartans. It was good matchup and they played a great game and really deserve the win. Good luck from here on out. Randy

My Special trap is a vent rib:

The wood has good figure and I will be refinishing the wood:

I am aware of the following related Iver Johnson 12 gauge single shot guns:

Champion (plain barrel)
Matted Rib
Special Trap (Vent rib two beads trap stock)

My barrel was "Browned" not blued.
Some barrels were blued and some receivers were case hardened.

It shoots nicely and locks up solid.
I hope to use it for trap.

I do not hunt, but if I did, this would be the gun I would use.
It is choked on the low side of full (about .034)

I am looking for a vintage 2nd generation Jostam Antiflinch.

I have a browned IJ Champion from 1923. Very comfortable, will go hunting with me this fall. Cost all of $45 2 weeks ago, still solid and tight, 30", Choke bore. Nice wood for a plain gun.
