I have been learning a lot, fixing up old sxs's of late. This board has been a tremendous help to me. Because of that, I wanted to share with everyone one of several projects I'm working on. I recently rescued a 12b hammer gun that was left for dead. I bought it primarily to challenge myself, because it had a major partially repaired break at the wrist, and I wanted to see if I could perfect a method to make the repair in a checkered area invisible, or at least nearly so. So, I bought some checkering tools (having never tried that before) and dove in head first, first filling in the rest of the crack, filing it down, then refinishing, re-checkering, and then blending the dark splotches of the repair into the rest of the checkering. I added some dark streaks to the stock too, since it was about as exciting as a canoe paddle. Teaching myself as I went, it was so much fun seeing a gun brought back to life, and become a thing of beauty again. Here are some before and after pics:

You do nice work. What did you use to put some streaks into the stock?

I'm also interested in how you got the streaking, it looks really great. Nice job!

A pro could see that repair from six feet away, but a novice might not... A bad nightmare is imagining someones hand after firing a previously broken stock only to have the hidden repair refracture.
JMO of course!

Thanks all. My "streak" method is similar to the extension blending I've been doing. Thin glazes of oil pigment mixed with oil finish, followed by multiple coats on top for durability. The streaks in the right side picture of the wrist are natural dark tiger stripe in the wood, not the crack repair. Nevertheless, as someone who is still learning, I make no claims to be anywhere near as proficient as Mr. Hughes, whose work I respect and admire tremendously.

I have had the pleasure of doing business with a couple other 'smiths that have been on this bbs, but SDH's views and general lack of any sense of courtesy has certainly insured that I don't have to bother with him. You're a tradesman, dude, not an "artist". Grow up.
JMO of course
