Yes, the machinery all came from the Colgate building in Jersey City. Strange as it seems it was an ideal setting for Pope. He had a whole floor rent free and Schuetzen Park was not far away from the shop. The last time I visited New Jersey the ornate wrought iron sign for the park was still in evidence on the west side of Bergen Blvd.

When did Pope's Jersey shop close? Was it at his death or before?

The shop closed after his death. The building lasted until relatively recently. I found out I know the people who owned the building and tore it down. I wish I knew that before it happened. I would have liked to have taken photos of the space he used.

The Ray Smith book has some low quality pictures of the machine from NJ, not put together correctly, and probably from after Pope's death. It's not like the one for sale, but both are sine bar riflers.

You could build a new one for less than the one for sale, but if you're a collector.....

I hit twenty two days later. I had joined the NRA two years before and knew who HMP was but had no idea that he was still alive and working in Jersey City, just across the Hudson from me. Lucian Cary was writing in True and perhaps also his Pyne stories in SatEvePost about that time. I was shooting on my college rifle team and if I had been a little more precocious I could have visited him.

I do remember Townsend Whelen and Seymour Griffin but I missed Harry Pope.

Harry M. Pope's middle name was Melville, but does anyone know the middle name of August O Zischang? I don't know and I can't find it.

Harry
