Hello,

I am looking for information and any idea of value of my old Greener shotgun.

The barrel rib says " W.W. Greener 68 Haymarket London & St Mary's Square Birmingham. Winner at London Gun Trials 1875, 1877, 1878 & 1879"

The barrel rib also has the following in an oval " Patent Tripe Wedge Fast"

The Trigger guard has "41384 List No 56"

The proof marks also has a strange Elephant mark.

" Patent Tripe Wedge Fast" in an oval form. Not sure if this is some kind of locking mechanism.

Any info on the model will be appreciate, not sure if this is Empire, Forrester or FH grades.

From Graham Greeners book,"The Greener Story" we can find the following info:
Gun #41584 was made circa 1893-4
List 56 I believe is in error and should read list 36![ie; list 56 is not recorded in Greeners records]. The list system of numbering is the second numbering system used by Greener. It was in use from 1889-1894. A list 36 gun sold for 25 Guineas[1 guinea = 21 english shillings] as compared to 60 guineas for their best gun. It was rated as low to medium grade.[Approx F25]
The elephant seen stamped on the action and/or barrels is Greeners trade mark and is found on all genuine Greener guns,It is not in any way connected to the proof marks.
Reference to the winner at the London gun trials was applied to the rib of many Greener Guns following their success at the trials. It dose not indicate that your gun was used in the trials.
Patent "Treble-wedge Fast", is the lock up system on your gun. Details of same can be found in many gun books. A primary feature of the action is the addition of A cross bolt that engages in a rib extension. This provides the third locking point. The action also incorporates the Purdey double bolt that engages in the lugs of the barrel.

Thanks Roy, really appreciate all the info.

Glad that it is a genuine Greener as some one also told me about fake Greener's from Belgium.

I checked the number again closely, it is List 56 and not 36.

Michael: As Dustin said "Very Nice Greener" As an aside I am told the elephant trademark came about when a circus elephant got loose in the streets of London and young William Greener was sent to dispatch it.

Best Regards, George
