I shot the D M Lefever this p.m. and the "invention" didn't seem to work perfectly, but one had to tip the open and loaded gun barrels to an extreme angle to make the shells fall out.

Maybe the springs were an invention by Gough Thomas, to hold the shells back against the breech, to prevent recoil.
