I would like to replace the hammer springs in my K 80. I have the springs and the hammer removal tool. I would be grateful if someone could list the steps starting right after "Remove the stock" or perhaps it is "Do not cock the action."

Many steps.Remove trigger guard,--sear springs(of 2 types)--cross pin on trigger lifter,--trigger cross pin,stop cross pin,sear cross pin, plate cross pin,---plate(both)screws(4),--trigger assembly(carefully),--sears,both plates,---top lever spring assembly,--hood retaining pin,--hood with lever.Remove hammer axel retaining screw(in hole for front trigger guard screw).Install hammer tool and remove axel and both hammers with cocking rods.Springs are next.Heck--might as well take out firing pin block as that is all that is left.Reassemble.Of course the hammer springs almost never need replacement,so all has been wasted.Or,more wisely, send the thing to a K gun repair place like Ottsville.

That's what I do. Every Ottsville invoice adds about that much to the value of the gun.

Hammer springs do weaken. In my experience they start to give light strikes between 30,000 to 35,000 firings.Some shooters need an annual more often than annually.

Ottsville does give excellent service. However their turn around time depends upon the volume of orders.

Not that hammer springs will not weaken,but most of the misfire problems that I see come from filth around the firing pins and the use of some brands of ammo. The bottom barrel usually goes first.I maintain quite a few K's and many are shot 25,000/yr and still only need complete take-down and cleaning every other year.

I've had heavily used forty year old K guns that have never been opened up and work fine. That "annual" stuff is highly overrated unless your gun is dropped in the lake. By the way, what repair shop's turnaround time doesn't depend on volume of orders?

Mine went about 120,000 without a problem. Sent it back because of nerves. After service it still works great.

I know this is a little off topic. I shoot skeet with 3 guys with K80s 1 with a K20 and 1 with an older K32. They are trying to covince me to get one. They just rave about their guns. I like them and have shot theirs. But, Are these really worth the money? I only shoot recreationally and about 100 shells a week at best. Mostly skeet but a round of sporting clays here and there. I've been looking at used ones for some time now and they seem to range 7k and up, mostly up. You never see any used ones around here for sale. Any comments or advise?

Yes. Widen your horizons when looking. You can own a good K gun for two grand if you look at well cared for K-32s and not just recent K-80s.

If you shoot 4 rounds a week. Just about anything will suffice.
Are they worth it? Only you can decide that. Just a tip K80's in fixed choked Skeet configuration with 28" barrels are likely the least expensive and the least popular. If this fits your requirements I think you should be able to pick one up fairly reasonable. I know of one for sale at this time (not mine) with a tube set that is a great buy. Let me know if your interested.
