I have just started to refine some Ratfish Oil, I got the fish on Friday night and am rendering it down now. It is the finest natural oil in the world from what I've been told. It was used by Jewelers for years. I presume it is a finer oil than most man made oil. It also can be used to free frozen screws, some oldtimers say it is better than Breakfree. (?) I've had a long wait on getting the fish.

Captain, is there another name for ratfish? Is it rended into oil by gutting and exposure to the sun? Is it a deep-water fish, by-catch of pollock bottom-trawling? I set up and was executive director for years of Atlantic Canada's offshore trawler captains' organization, Fishing Masters Association, and could get ratfish if they are here. Thanks.

We use to Longline them in 40 to 100 fathoms, usually around Dog Fish (Small sharks). I've been trying to get my daughter to get some for about a year now. They were very excited where she works because she will now quite bothering them.
I carefully removed the spine, gut the fish, and wash the liver off. We then placed the liver in a jar, it would be nice to put it in the sun but we will not see it again until later this week. (the sun) I keep the jars inside during the day and put them outside at night. I do not have the scientific name of the fish but will try to find it.

WD-40 is a cleaner more than a lubricant because it is too thin to last as far as I am concerned. It is great to start a lawn mower with when it doesn't start. But I use Clenzoil on my guns. And I agree with Chuck, I don't think Rem-oil has any abrasives that I have ever heard of.

Very limited application of STOS (grease) by Ponsness /Warren and BreakFree LP4 (oil) This is the best answer, IMHO. A little jar of the PW STOS lives at my cleaning station. Just a very light coating is all you need. ....just like bryllcream ...a little dab'll do 'ya.

I believe it is called a ratfish because of the shape of the head and the long, skinny tail. Not because of teeth, if it has any. In any case, I have to admit I've never seen a rusty or gummed up ratfish.
FWIW, I Googled "ratfish oil". Came up with lots of uses but no mention of using it as a lubricant.
