You have to remember that all European dogs were at one time required to hunts fur and feathers. Hence a lot of them were bred with hounds and were ground scenters.

Just my opinion, but English pointers should have the high head and tail, setter's tail straight out, like in the old pictures of them. Field trialers ruined that.

Gun engravers have used pattern books for hundreds of years. Similar subjects may be from the same pattern rather than by the same hand.

I believe that. There are some fine quality guns out there with engravings that are just wrong, some of the birds and dogs are hideous.

On the L.C. Smith Maker of Baker Shotguns trigger guard, I'm guessing the engraver was Jacob Glahn, who in my opinion was one of the best dog engravers then. I also think Albert Kraus, another great dog engraver, studied under him in the early years. Some of Kraus's work on high grade L.C. Smiths is fabulous.

I think that Glahn was a bird dog person like Dan Lefever. They probably had no sketch books or reference material. They just went to the kennel.
