Any thoughts on what is special? Viscocity? Changes in viscocity with temperature? Resistance to oxidation? Adheasion to metalic surfaces? Surface tension?

Thanks Rocketman for clearing up the matter of the abrasive stuff made by Remington. Rem Clean has the abrasive, Rem Oil is the lubricant only. The names are similar, guess my old grey matter got them mixed up. Knew it was something like that. For those who have not used the Rem Clean product, it's a pretty good mild bore cleaner, the abrasive seems to be about like a kitchen sink scouring powder, pretty mild. It'll help "polish" out an old shotgun chamber when spun on a drill motor and bore swab.

When I taught at the Texas Maritime Academy (now College of Maritime Studies, Texas A&M Univ - Galveston) we used instrument oil made from jujube beans for all our marine sextants (C. Plaths, Tamayas and Leupolds). This oil replaced the sperm whale oil which was considered the best for instruments, including recording barometers, gauges, and watches. In order to save money, my students would go down to the local health food store (GNC) and buy jujube bean oil to oil their sextants after cleaning when spending evenings on a small boat deck offshore doing their celestial navigation workups. Celestaire, a navigation supply company, and our local ships' chandlers sell this same oil for quite a markup.
However, for my guns, regardless of age and quality, I believe in Breakfree CLP for cleaning and preserving, and Rem-Oil for lub. I use short-fiber lithium grease for boat trailer wheel bearings for the hinge pins (I filled a film cannister with a scoop of this from work several years ago and have yet to put much of a dent in it). Jim, Just my thoughts about Breakfree and RemOil. I think they're very similar. Both have teflon additive suspended in a light oil. I only switched to RemOil because it was cheaper and more convenient in small aerosol cans and it wasn't quite as odiferous in the house.
With regard to greases, I don't see how any of us could say a superduper expensive grease would make any better wear difference on a light duty application like a gun when compared to your choice.

I was told by a very experienced person 'not' to use grease on the hinge pin ?

HJ, I don't think there is any objective data to support either grease being better for the hinge pin or a good oil. I'm betting motor oil on the hinge pin would provide more than adequate lubrication if a drop were placed there occasionally.
Most people would use grease on the hinge because it stays put. That's the purpose of what my granpa used to call 'thick ol'. In fact, greases have a lube oil and thickeners to make them stay in place.

Why no quality grease on hinge pin? ? I simply wipe it off prior to placing in oak and leather case and re-apply at next field trip. I use Pennzoil synthetic Marine Grease which does not attract much dust anyway.

Grease and oil do not "attract" dust or dirt. However, they will trap it and contain it (one of their jobs). Changing the oil/grease gets rid if said contaminants.

I am sure what will be special in ratfish oil will be its smell!

P.S.: a long time ago (over half a century) my mother tried to make my sister and me drink cod liver oil... I remember seeing the bottle in the fridge for ages, after we spat the first spoonful on the kitchen floor. JC
