Is there any problem firing 2 3/4" in 2 1/2" chambers with 1" cones? I'm figuring like RST loads.

Thanks

Not likely. Data ususally shows that pressure rise is only significant when using higher pressure and the cone length is near or shorter than the crimp length. The described chanber and cone would be 3 1/2" long and most 2 3/4" cases are a tad under 2 3/4" when fired. Just be sure you are always using known pressure shells.

Sherman Bell's "finding out for myself" tests indicated that lengthened cones usually result in some reduction of pressure, although usually fairly slight (a few hundred fps).

Most important data what is bore size? If bores of 12G-2.5" gun marked as 13 I'd go for 2 1/2 cases.

I have several guns I've lengthened the forcing cones on to shoot longer shells, including a 410 and it's always worked fine.

Thanks Geno.

I measured the bores at .726-7 and it is marked 13/1. What measurement does the 13 designation come into play? Here's a pic. Also, anyway of knowing approximate date of mfg.?

You should be very slow to drop a reamer of any kind in those barrels before you have had them measured and know that there is enough steel to tolerate the change. The chamber/cone mod in an already light gun could easily make for toooooo thin barrels... Have a VERY competent gunsmith make that evaluation.

or just leave it alone and shoot the proper loads

There was a monster thread on this very topic quite recently. My unanswered question then was if it didn't make any difference then why did the gunmakers mark short chambers? Why not just the gauge? And you knew the gun was a 2.5" when you bought it. Why did you do that if you had any reservations about getting the proper ammo? And why do you believe that the people here, sight unseen, can assess the ability of you gun to tolerate 23/4" cases? 2.5" ammo is easy to make. If I were you I'd give it a try before I stuffed some modern 23/4" whatsis in there.

just a thot

Why not just shoot the shells it was designed for....2.5" which are readily available, to reload use new Cheddite 2.5" hulls or off the shelf ready to fire 2.5" new RST or Polywads.........? ---2.5" fired hulls come out nice and flat and clean.......there is no appreciable gain in shooting 2.75".......especially if you load your own 2.5" to meet your own standards..........

Thanks

The one inch cones are already there. At 3 1/2", the OD is .950 with the bore at .727. So, there is about .112 wall thickness.

I patterned the gun the other day using RST lite 1 oz. 2 3/4", mistakenly thinking I had the 2 1/2".

I ordered RST 2 1/2" the other day.

I do have some Polywad Vintagers 2 1/2". Anyone know how they compare to RST 2 1/2?
