It's obviously quite repeatable.

Consider that the muzzle of a rifle barrel moves in a circle as the projectile moves up the bore.

Ever study large caliber naval gunfire control? There's some interesting factors there too...

Hits are a combination of applied arts (aka engineering) in all cases.

The ultimate moving target hit was the Cassini spacecraft entry into a perfect orbit around Saturn. That's also ballistics.

Fascinating, isn't it?

All this makes me wonder if all this science regarding the doublegun was applied to the first one or they just built it?

There is no inherent inaccuracy! What's the matter with you? Have you ever shot a SxS before?
There's the old saying that "there are no stupid questions" but in your case I'm not too sure. smirk

Chuck, was that with Van Allen and pictures in the early 60s? I was there with Homer Smith making a documentary.

Mars is 'bench rest skeet' compared with Saturn.

Long poke.

Best shot in history was firing the Lunar Module engine on the far side of the moon to bring Apollo 13 within 4 miles of the recovery carrier!

King, I was just pokin' fun at NASA's miscalculation on the Mars Surveyor. In 1998 they crashed directly into Mars (10 ringed it) with a vehicle intended to orbit. The miscalculation had to do with thrust data in english units and navigation software in metric units, both from separate contractors. Shortly after this failure, the second half of the exploration project was to be a Mars lander which crashed into the surface during the landing phase. NASA was looking really bad after these failures and the shuttle launch disaster a little over 10 yrs prior.

Bushmaster,
Apollo 13 was the longest "dead stick" (pilot talk for engine out flight) in history. I have had 5 "dead stick" landings in my time. Things from blown engines to fuel vapor lock, water in the fuel, propeller bolt failures... I made a hat with an Apollo 13 patch on it, then had little airplane tie-tacks for each airplane type that I had the dead stick in. It's in the closet somewhere. I started that hat with 2 pins and ended up with 5.
